Certain spells and creature abilities target other creatures.

Whenever you use a spell or creature ability that says to do something to a target, you choose the target for that ability. You can only target creatures that are in the battle zone (unless otherwise stated).

Examples of cards that target

As these cards use the word target, they do target.

Card: Ability:
Death Smoke Banish target untapped enemy creature.
Root Trap Put target enemy creature from the battle zone into your opponent's mana zone.
Containment Field Tap a number of target enemy creatures equal to the number of creatures you have in the battle zone.
Veil Vortex Return target creature from the battle zone to its owner's hand.
Blade-Rush Wyvern When this creature enters the battle zone, banish target enemy creature that has "Blocker".

Examples of cards that don't target

As these cards do not use the word target, they do not target.

Card: Ability:
Devouring Smog Your opponent chooses one of his or her untapped creatures in the battle zone. Banish that creature.
Ensnare Your opponent chooses one of his or her untapped creatures in the battle zone. Put that creature into your opponent's mana zone.
Cyber Cyclones Choose one of your creatures in the battle zone and return it to your hand. Then your opponent chooses one of his or her creatures in the battle zone. Return that creature to your opponent's hand.
Queen Kalima When this creature enters the battle zone, you may put the top 3 cards of your deck into your discard pile. For each Darkness card put into your discard pile this way, your opponent chooses one of his or her creatures in the battle zone. Banish those creatures.
Stormspark Blast Tap all enemy creatures.
Crimson Wyvern When this creature enters the battle zone, banish all enemy creatures that have "Blocker".

Rulings

Cards such as Eternal Haven or Keeper of Laws can't be affected by abilities that target but they can be affected by abilities that do not target such as Choice Removal and Slayers.
